Formerly know as Dr. Mambo’s Combo, the new Combo features R&B, funk, blues, rock and jazz performed by three generations of the Twin Cities most talented singers and musicians. The band started in 1987 as a jam session and recently celebrated their tenth anniversary. The band began winning awards immediately after they were formed including four Minnesota Music Awards. The band also won the Minnesota Black Music Award’s Best R&B Local Band award. Every Monday night for the past 10 years has been the Combo’s night at Bunker’s Bar & Grill in Minneapolis. The band has acquired a group of local followers that has expanded to international status making Bunker’s a hang out for locals and celebrities alike. The Legendary Combo is made up of some of the area’s finest musicians. Sharing drum duties are Michael Bland who has drummed with Prince, and Dave Anania who plays with Greazy Meal. Steve Cherewan on keyboards is one of the most sought after players in the Twin Cities. Margie Cox on lead and background vocals has released two albums of her own and won critical acclaim a few years ago for a song on Prince’s "1-800-New-Funk" album. Billy Franze on lead guitar and lead vocals is one of the best guitar players in the Twin Cities. He has toured and/or recorded with Prince, The Mystics, Mavis Staples, and Jonny Lang. Mark Licktieg on lead vocals has been respectfully called by his peers "the white man with a lotta soul." Doug Nelson plays bass when he is not touring with the Jonny Lang band. Greg Sain on lead vocals co-produced the critically acclaimed song "Standing At The Alter."
